Volvo, already well-known as an industry leader in vehicle safety, is taking its reputation up a notch with the newly implemented Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) system. SPA is designed to revolutionize safe driving, not only in Volvo’s native Sweden, but all over the world.

With a lightweight (yet extremely resilient) hot-formed boron-steel frame and electrically connected safety and dynamics systems – the auto manufacturer is hoping that by 2020, death or serious injury from auto accidents will be a thing of the past for new Volvo drivers. Volvo: Volvo Car Group Completes Successful Study of Cordless Charging for Electric Cars

Volvo is participating in a research study for cordless charging of electric vehicles that could further change the future of the automotive industry. This technology of inductive charging transfers energy via an electromagnetic field to the vehicle as opposed to the plug-in method that electric vehicles currently use.

An electric-vehicle driver would park over an inductive charging station which automatically begins charging the car. While there is still much development ahead for inductive charging, Volvo is already a step ahead, as one of the first to experiment with this technology. The editors at Up To Speed recognize the steps that Volvo is taking to become part of the eco-friendly market. Consumers are looking for those companies offering vehicles that are better for the environment, and Volvo is adapting to these changing needs. In 2012, Volvo released the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid, but it will be interesting to see how they develop their vehicles in upcoming years to eventually introduce the inductive charging system to consumers.
